Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship Goals and Objectives

The goal of the training program in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at UMMC is to provide fellows an intensive, state-of-the-art training across the spectrum of newborn medicine, including antenatal consultation, delivery room resuscitation and stabilization, acute intensive care management, convalescent care, coordination of community consultation and neonatal transport and infant follow-up.

Fellows will be instructed and evaluated in competencies that include: Patient care, medical knowledge, professionalism, system-based practice, practice-based learning and improvement and interpersonal and communication skills. The curriculum in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at our institution reflects our commitment to train academic neonatologists who can render high quality clinical care, perform significant scholarly activities, and teach effectively. Our philosophy is to:

  • Teach evidence-based clinical medicine stressing physiologic principles for every diagnostic and therapeutic decision.
  • Integrate basic science teaching into clinical instruction.
  • Teach the basis for Quality Improvement projects, scientific investigation, study design, and the analysis and reporting of study results.
  • Provide opportunities to participate effectively in curriculum development, delivery of information, provision of feedback to learners, and assessment of educational outcomes.

The fellows are expected to participate in assigned clinical rotations, attend and present at didactic sessions designed to provide a breadth of knowledge in clinical neonatology, and in the physiological principles and basis of diagnosis and management, prospectively collect data on patients (mortality and morbidity statistics), analyze and present them, receive instruction in how to undertake research and participate in significant research that will translate into reporting of findings at scientific meetings and in peer reviewed journals and the submission of a grant application (if eligible).
